Taqwa (piety) in Islam

TAQWA means not only fearing Allah but it has a deep meaning. It means doing what Allah has enjoyed and avoiding what he has forbidden.

Fasting is a good exercise to build Taqwa. Try to avoid the Haram and increase your worship by reading Qur’an, contemplating its meaning, praying at night, give sadaqah (voluntary charity), and then ask Allah to be from his righteous servants.

Among the signs of Taqwa is that a Muslim should have patience, sincerity, and loyalty. The Prophet is the greatest example of noble character that has Taqwa of Allah.

There are a lot of advantages of Taqwa according to Qur’an and sunnah that Allah loves the righteous. Allah will reward his righteous servants with gardens, springs, and shades. And also will be in a secure place, as in the following ayahs and hadiths

Allah says in the Holy Qur’an :

بَلَى مَنْ أَوْفَى بِعَهْدِهِ وَاتَّقَى فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُتَّقِينَ

“Absolutely! Those who honor their trusts and shun evil—surely Allah loves those who are mindful ˹of Him˺”. [Surah Aal-E-Imran 76

” Indeed, the righteous will be amid Gardens and springs”. [Surah Al-Hijr 45]

” The Gardens of Eternity which they will enter, under which rivers flow. In it they will have whatever they desire. This is how Allah rewards the righteous”. [Surah An-Nahl 31

” Indeed, the righteous will be in a secure place”. [Surah Ad-Dukhan 45

” Indeed, the righteous will be amid ˹cool˺ shade and springs”. [Surah Al-Mursalat 41]

Taqwa is a way to Jannah in the Hereafter, as in the following Hadith:

Sulaim bin Amir narrated:

“I heard Abu Umamah saying: I heard the Messenger of Allah giving a Khutbah during the Farewell Hajj, and he said: ‘Have Taqwa of your Lord, and pray your five (prayers), and fast your month, and pay the Zakat on your wealth, and obey those who are in charge of you, you will enter Jannah of your Lord.'” He said: “I said to Abu Umamah: ‘How old were you when you heard this Hadith (from the Messenger of Allah)?’ He said: ‘I heard it when I was thirty years old.'” (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 616)

Muslim cannot attain complete righteousness until he abandons unobjectionable things, as in the following Hadith:

Atiyyah bin ‘Urwah As-Sa’di (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, “No one will attain complete righteousness until he abandons (certain) unobjectionable (but doubtful) things to remain on his guard against something objectionable.”

[At-Tirmidhi, who classified it as Hadith Hasan].

To apply taqwa every day in your life, you must ask yourself about your deeds toward what Allah has forbidden, and then improve your wrong deeds, and ask Allah to be from the righteous.
